The Big Surprise

“Rhonda? Is that you? What are you doing at the gynecologist’s?"

"My God, Sally. I haven’t seen you since we graduated from high school. What’s it been? Three years?”

“Hard to believe so much time has gone by. Let me give you a hug.”

“I know I’ve gained a bit of weight since we were cheerleaders.”

“You still look good. So what’re you here for?”

“Just a check-up. My little Tony’s six months old and I need something to help me get rid of this baby fat. It’s hard to be sexy when you’re carrying an extra thirty pounds. You haven’t changed a bit.”

“I didn’t even know that you got married. And you have a six-month-old baby? That’s wonderful.”

“I guess so. He’s a real handful. But what about you? What’re you doing here? Did you get married? Are you pregnant?”

“No. I need a prescription for birth control pills. I ran into a guy we knew in high school. He was pretty wild back then, but he seems to have settled down. He’s nice. Really thoughtful and considerate. I’ve got a picture of him somewhere in my purse. So who did you marry?”

“Remember crazy Anthony Carlino? Always into fast cars. He was a football player, a year ahead of us. He’s working at my father’s garage.”

“Oh, yeah. I think I remember him. Didn’t he go to our prom with Sue Tortorolla?”

“That’s right, he did. They broke up right after we graduated and that’s when we started going together. What about that picture?”

“I guess I don’t have that photo after all.”
